Ever walk into a room and feel like something is just off, but you can’t figure out what it is?

Sometimes it’s not your furniture, your paint color, or even your decor. It’s the measurements!

A chandelier hanging too high, a TV mounted in the wrong spot, or a bed squeezed against a wall can make even the most beautiful room feel uncomfortable.

The good news? You don’t need a big renovation or an expensive shopping spree to fix these common decorating mistakes.

Here are three measurements that can make a huge difference in how your home looks and feels.

Image showing guidelines for chandelier height in the dining room, with a recommended height of 30-36 inches above the table.

1. Dining Room: Is Your Chandelier Hanging Too High?

30–36″

Above the dining table

Your chandelier should bring the entire dining space together, not look like it’s floating near the ceiling.

For a standard 8-foot ceiling, the bottom of your chandelier should typically hang 30–36 inches above the tabletop.

If your ceilings are higher, you may want to raise it slightly.

My decorating tip: Your chandelier should generally be about one-half to two-thirds the width of your dining table. This helps create a balanced look without overwhelming the room.

2. Living Room: Your TV Might Be Too High!

Approximate TV center height from floor

One of the most common living room mistakes is mounting the TV too high.

While placing it above the fireplace might look beautiful, it isn’t always the most comfortable viewing position.

Ideally, the center of your TV should be close to your eye level when you’re sitting on the couch. For many living rooms, that’s approximately 42 inches from the floor to the center of the screen.

The exact height depends on your seating and TV size.

My decorating tip: Sit on your sofa and look straight ahead. That’s your starting point! You shouldn’t have to tilt your neck upward to enjoy movie night.

3. Bedroom: Are You Leaving Enough Space Around Your Bed?

30–36″

Ideal walking space around the bed

We all love a big, comfortable bed, but sometimes bigger isn’t better.

If your bed takes up too much space, your bedroom can feel crowded, even when it’s beautifully decorated.

Try to leave 30–36 inches of walking space along the accessible sides and foot of your bed. In smaller rooms, 24 inches may be workable, but additional clearance makes everyday movement easier.

And don’t forget to account for dresser drawers and closet doors!

My decorating tip: Before purchasing a new bed, use painter’s tape to outline its dimensions on the floor. It’s an easy way to see whether your dream bed actually fits your space.

These are starting points, not rigid rules. Your room dimensions, furniture, and how you use the space should always guide the final placement.
